The Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber is one of the most introspective pieces of music in the Western canon. Like an onion, the work reveals layers of tear provoking musical thought. Just when the listener couldn't become any sadder, the music wrings more melancholy from the heart.
Why listen to something that provokes such intense emotion? I believe it is good medicine. By experiencing the depths, we can then experience the heights with a renewed sensibility. Good music helps humanity to make contact with its innermost being by sparking an authentic emotional response. The Adagio is an elixir that accomplishes its divine mission in a glorious fashion. RR
